Policies and Practices

Borrowing: All residents of Pomfret are encouraged to become members of the public library. Children may have their own card when they are able write their name. Parents or guardians must accept responsibility for items borrowed by children under 16 years old. Nonresidents are welcome to borrow from Pomfret Public Library using a current library card from the town they reside in.

Circulation: Books and audio books are checked out for three weeks at a time, movies and magazines circulate for one week. Items may be renewed so long as they have not been reserved for another patron. You may renew by phone during our operating hours, or online by logging into your account in our online catalog. All materials may be returned in our book drop; please secure items that may get damaged (magazines, videos, extra heavy books...) by putting them in a plastic bag before dropping them into the box. Overdue fines are "according to your conscience". Please see the librarian regarding the replacement of lost or damaged library materials.

Computer and Internet use: The library has three computers with Internet connections available for public use, and WiFi for patrons who provide their own laptop. Computer sessions are not timed, but we may limit you to 1/2 hour if another patron is waiting. Printing is available through the library computers, but not the WiFi connection. We ask that you do not alter in any way our software or hardware confugurations.
Parents are advised to supervise their child's internet and computer use. The library is not responsible for accuracy of information received or the security of your private information (ie.credit card numbers) Computers are located in public areas, shared by patrons of all ages. You may not use them for anything illegal, unethical or inappropriate, including misrepresentaion of your identity, copywrite or intellectual property violations, or viewing of pornography.

Copier: Patrons are welcome to use the library's copier/printer/fax machine. The fee is .10/page, payable at the circulation desk. The fax machine is for sending only. Please see the librarian to change the settings on our 4-in-1 machine before sending a fax. We do not have a set fee for faxing, but ask that you make some donation that would cover the cost of long distance calling.

Interlibrary Loans: Pomfret Public Library is pleased to offer free interlibrary loan service to our patrons through reQuest, the statewide library database. Each patron may submit up to 10 requests per week. Most items come within two weeks and are delivered on Tuesday or Thursday. Pomfret Public Library is responsible for ILL items borrowed on your behalf. The cost of replacing any lost or damaged items will be passed on to the patron.

Donations: The Friends of Pomfret Public Library gratefully accept donations of books, audio books on CD and DVDs. Library staff will retain anything of use in our collection, the remaining items go to the annual Friends booksale. Our storage is limited - if you have several boxes of books, we ask that you hold them until the week prior to our sale. Small cash donations for overdues, copier use and random acts of generosity can be placed in the donations can at the circulation desk. If you would like to make a substantial donation, grant or endowment, please contact the president of the Library Board or Friends group.

Collection: Our goal is to maintain a collection that meets the needs of library users and the community, and includes materials of both current popular interest and classics of permanent value. The library staff reads professional journals and reviews, selecting items that strengthen and expand our existing collection. Suggestions from individuals are always welcome. Pomfret Public Library is a small library, limited by shelf space to about 20,000 items; we encourage patrons to use the interlibrary loan service when our own collection is insufficient for their needs. Materials are withdrawn when they are damaged, obsolete, or no longer of interest (as evidenced by circulation records).

Weather closings: The Library follows the lead of the public school in determining weather closings. If school is closed or dismissed early, so is the library. Please call the library (928-3475) or listen to WINY 1350AM before venturing out in snow or freezing rain.

Community Bulletin Board: Display and brochure space is available for any nonprofit educational or cultural event or program, with priority given to the library and other local groups.
